C & B Gourmet Shoppe

C & B Gourmet Shoppe

Location: 20 Fredrick Street, Oatley, Sydney

Client: C & B Gourmet Shoppe

Background

Serving the local community since 2011 this humble sandwich bar has made a big impact on the local food scene. Located in the suburb's original post office, built in 1929, it was renovated in 1969 and lost most of its heritage charm including the store's façade.

The clients are passionate about the food they have on offer but feel that their current interior doesn't draw in customers from the busy main street of Oatley. To bring in new business they felt a complete reimagination of the space was needed.

  • 98m2  ground floor redevelopment

  • Create an inviting façade

  • Increase the seating to accommodate 20 customers

  • Restore the heritage charm of the building

  • Remove the front steps for accessibility

Concept

The newly imagined C & B Gourmet Shoppe embodies the soul and character of the Oatley community. A new glass storefront is framed by mottled green, matte tiles and allows for an abundance of natural light to bathe the new dine in sandwich bar.  The soft green tiles continue into the interior adding a dash of colour to the warm and fresh tones of the wood and leather benches, and crisp venetian plaster walls.

A symmetrical floor plan with a ramp up the middle was used to allow for flow of customers as they moved throughout the venue. Two raised banks of booth seating made form Australian ash and tanned leather allow for ample, comfortable seating. The herringbone brick ramps open to the white pencil tiled bar that displays all the fresh and colourful food on offer. There are two booth seats with cantilevered arm tables opposite the POS that offer a place for take away customers to wait. The original pressed tin ceiling tiles from the awning outside have been carried through into the store and down the back of the wall. The design has restored the heritage value of the old post office whilst offering the residence of Oatley and comfortable, elegant option for their Sunday brunch.
